FAQ's
Is Chiropractic
safe?
Chiropractic is the safest of the healing professions. Chiropractors
have the lowest malpractice insurance rates of the any of the major
health professions because our care is safe and effective. Chiropractors
are trained to know when to adjust, and when not to adjust. We are taught
how to work with people with every conceivable health condition.
Are Chiropractic
x-rays safe?
Yes. Chiropractors use x-rays to evaluate the structure of the spine.
As you have learned, the function of your body is dictated by the structure
(and vice versa). It is important that your chiropractor be able to
see exactly what is happening in your spine, structure-wise.
As for safety, modern x-ray equipment uses high-speed screens and film,
so that a good x-ray may be made with a minimum of exposure. Chiropractors
have extensive training in x-ray safety, radiology, and x-ray physics.
And, in most states, the State Health Department that inspects medical
x-ray equipment also inspects and certifies Chiropractic x-ray equipment.
Is Chiropractic
cost effective?
Many studies in recent years (Rand, Manga, etc.) show that for many
conditions, Chiropractics is by far THE most cost-effective treatment
available. In fact, people who use Chiropractic regularly spent less
on all health care expenses, simply because they are healthier, and
have less illness and injury. Add to this regular care that is wellness
oriented and you have your best chance for avoiding dangerous high tech
medical, surgical, and hospital care.
What causes
the pop noise?
The most commonly accepted explanation is the pop sound
is the result of nitrogen bubbles that are produced from the synovial
fluid cavitating as the joint is moved. However, the pop
sound is irrelevant you can be adjusted without hearing a pop.
Or, just because something is popped, that doesnt
necessarily mean that the subluxation was corrected.
Is it OK to
crack your own back and neck?
No. When you crack your spine, you are moving vertebrae
at random and the crack may have more to do with tearing
soft tissue than moving bones. The chances of you actually moving something
into the proper position are pretty slim. Consider this Doctors
of Chiropractic study and train for years to learn how to adjust. Even
with this knowledge, a Chiropractor physically cannot adjust himself.
Chiropractors need other Chiropractors to examine and adjust their spines.
Can Chiropractic
help people who have had back surgery?
Yes. Of course, it is best to see a Chiropractor first, before you have
traumatic irreversible surgery that often is not effective, especially
teens who may have bars, braces or screws permanently placed in their
backs and will never be normal again. But, patients who have had back
surgery can sill benefit from Chiropractic care. Your Chiropractor can
evaluate your spine and determine where he or she should (or shouldnt)
adjust. Remember, Chiropractors evaluate the entire spine, so even if
you have had surgery in a particular area, theres still much for
the Chiropractor to work with to help your body express optimum wellness.
Does my insurance
cover Chiropractic?
Most insurance programs do cover Chiropractic care. Many studies in
recent years have shown that Chiropractic is the most effective (and
most cost effective approach to health). As a result, many insurance
companies have added Chiropractic coverage, because they have found
that it saves them money, and their insured customers are very pleased
with their Chiropractic care.
I already exercise/get
massage, so do I still need Chiropractic?
Chiropractic deals with the function of the nervous system and the structure
of the spine. Because the nervous system controls everything in your
body, it is vital that it functions without interference. Massage can
relax the muscles and improve circulation, but if the nerves are irritated,
the muscle will tighten up again. Exercise is a vital part of any wellness
program, but it can never substitute for Chiropractic care. In fact,
studies show that
