7 Tips to Get Rid of Headaches
For many people, headaches are just an occasional, annoying part of life.
Whether they’re caused by stress at work, a lack of sleep, forgetting to eat, or trying to decrease your caffeine intake, even a mild headache can bring your day to a screeching halt as you deal with the pain in your head.
Rather than popping a few aspirin and willing the pain away, here are some things you can do to help get rid of your headache when they strike:
Try Hot or Cold Packs
Heat and ice packs can help alleviate the pain from headaches, but whether you use heat or ice depends on the type of headache you have.
If you’re suffering from a migraine, a cold pack on your forehead – or even ice cubes or frozen vegetables in a pinch – can help relieve the pain you feel. Taking a cold shower can help, also.
For a tension headache, try a heating pad or hot compress on the back of your head. If you have a sinus headache, apply a warm cloth to the area that hurts.
A warm shower can also help relieve a tension or sinus headache.
Some headaches are caused by pressure on your scalp, such as from a ponytail, hat, headband, or goggles.
If you suspect this might be the cause of your headache, try removing whatever is adding pressure to your scalp and see if that helps.
Dim the Lights
Bright and flickering lights, including those from a computer or TV screen, can trigger migraines.
If you suffer from migraines, do what you can to decrease the amount of bright light, including covering your windows with blackout curtains and wearing sunglasses outdoors. These preventative measures can decrease the frequency and severity of your migraines.
To help ease a headache already in progress, try lying down in a dark room or covering your eyes with a cloth to reduce the amount of bright light you’re exposed to. If you can’t completely lie down in the dark, consider putting on some sunglasses, taking a break from computer work, or just dimming the overhead lights.
While one of the last things you may feel you’re able to do in the midst of a headache is relax, easing your stress and overall tension is important to helping alleviate your pain.
Try some light stretching, yoga, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation to help you decrease your tension during a headache. But don’t wait until you’re mid-headache to begin these practices; get used to your method of choice before a headache strikes so you don’t have to think about what you’re doing.
Massage is a great stress-reliever, but you don’t have to go into a professional to benefit during a headache.
Just a few minutes spent gently massaging your forehead, neck, and temples can help ease a tension headache and get you feeling better. If you’re unable to massage your own shoulders, consider getting a massaging pillow you can use when a headache strikes.
Watch Your Diet
Your diet easily can trigger a headache, especially if you aren’t eating when you should or you let yourself get dehydrated.
Try to eat a balanced diet at regular times during the day, and make sure you stay hydrated.
Sometimes, headaches can result from subluxations in your spine, leading to pinching and stress on the muscles and nerves of the neck and shoulders.
Getting a regular chiropractic adjustment can help bring your spine back into alignment and correct these subluxations, making you less likely to experience headaches.
