How Chiropractic Helps Sciatica

How Chiropractic Helps Sciatica

Sciatica is a painful condition that affects over 3 million people per year in the United States. The pain experienced can range from occasionally annoying to downright debilitating.

If you’ve ever experienced pain that started in the muscle of your buttock, and ran down the back of your leg, even into your heel, you’ve experienced sciatic nerve pain.

If you or someone you know suffers from sciatica, chiropractic can help! Read on to learn how:

What Is Sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It is actually a bundle of five nerves that exit from the lumbar spine and group together in the piriformis muscle of the buttock to make one large nerve which travels down the back of each leg.

This nerve is responsible for sensations and strength in your legs. A problem with the nerve can cause muscle weakness, numbness, tingling, and pain.

When someone experiences persistent pain along the route of the sciatic nerve, this is referred to as sciatica.

Diagnosis

Sciatica is not actually a diagnosis in and of itself, but rather a name for specific symptoms related to an issue with the sciatic nerve. Your doctor will have to determine the root cause in order to come up with the best options for treatment.

Some conditions that cause sciatica are:

  • Herniated or slipped disc (most common)
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on the nerves)
  • Spondylolisthesis (slipping vertebrae)
  • Piriformis syndrome (spasms or tightening in the muscle of the buttocks)
  • Any wear and tear of the base of the spine

These conditions can occur because of injury or simply from aging. Other risk factors include obesity, diabetes, and even prolonged sitting, which can cause changes in the spine.

Treatment Options

Depending on the severity of sciatica, there are a few treatment options that can result in pain relief. These include:

  • For mild to moderate pain:
    • Physical therapy
    • Stretching
    • Exercise
    • Rest
    • Hot or cold packs
    • Massage
    • Chiropractic
    • Acupuncture
    • NSAIDs
  • For more severe cases:
    • Diskectomy (removal of whatever is pressing on the nerve)
    • Laminectomy (removal of lamina and tissue pressing against the nerve)
    • Epidural steroid injection

The Case For Chiropractic

Since surgery does not always result in the desired outcome, and pain relief medication can become addicting, many patients turn to a more holistic approach instead. For those who want to steer clear of invasive surgeries and/or strong medications, chiropractic adjustments are a great option!

By realigning the spine, an adjustment by a chiropractor can take pressure off the sciatic nerve, resulting in immediate pain relief. Imagine walking out the door, pain free!

When your spine is properly aligned, your body can do what it was made to do. This includes stopping the production of neuropeptides, which can reduce inflammation.

Chiropractic adjustments can also help mobilize the spine, restoring range of motion. This is great news for those who find their sciatica debilitating!
